The Faculty of Education is committed to all aspects of education including initial and continuing teacher education, the development of research-based policy and practice, and educational research and teaching of the highest quality. Teacher education has been offered in Cambridge for over 130 years and during this time courses have evolved which combine an excellent academic reputation with a top-quality professional training for students who wish to become teachers. The PGCE courses are stimulating and challenging, designed to prepare trainees to become outstanding classroom teachers in state schools throughout the UK, and to equip trainees for leadership roles in those schools in the future. The aim is to enthuse and excite trainees about teaching children and subjects, and to develop the knowledge, skills and expertise of beginning teachers so that they are able to present learning as an exciting and transformative experience for the young people in schools. PGCE initial teacher education has regularly (in every inspection since 1997) achieved the very highest grades, at both Early Years / Primary and Secondary level. The Faculty also makes major contributions to the University’s regional outreach programmes through its continuing professional development courses for teachers (with a particular emphasis on leadership), and has more than 450 masters and doctoral students. The Faculty of Education has a significant number of faculty members who will be involved in the Transforming Education in Niger State (TENS) programme.
